Course Description: 5-Day Mural Workshop - Re-Create the Libyan Sibyl

Join master artisan Ronald Layman for an immersive 5-day, 35-hour hands-on mural workshop, where you'll embark on a journey to re-create the iconic Libyan Sibyl. This course is designed for artists of all levels who want to deepen their understanding of classical techniques and learn the intricate process of mural painting from start to finish.

Over the course of five days, you will be guided through the meticulous steps required to produce a stunning mural on a 3.5-foot wide by 5-foot tall canvas. From creating the initial cartoon to transferring it onto the canvas and applying the paint, you will gain invaluable skills and insights into the traditional methods of mural painting. All tools and supplies will be provided, and we will be using slow-dry matte acrylic artist colors by Golden Artist Colors to achieve a professional finish.

Course Outline:

Day 1: Cartoon Creation and Transfer

  • Morning Session:
    • Overview of the Libyan Sibyl and its significance in art history.
    • Introduction to the tools and materials needed for the project.
    • Demonstration on how to create a cartoon (preliminary drawing) for the mural.
  • Afternoon Session:
    • Hands-on practice: Students will begin drawing their cartoons, focusing on proportions, lines, and key features.
    • Techniques for transferring the cartoon onto a large canvas, including grid and pouncing methods.
    • Students will transfer their cartoons onto their 3.5-foot wide by 5-foot tall canvases, with instructor-led feedback and refinement.

Day 2: Underpainting and Blocking in Colors

  • Morning Session:
    • Introduction to the underpainting process, focusing on establishing tonal values.
    • Demonstration of blocking in the major color areas of the Libyan Sibyl.
  • Afternoon Session:
    • Hands-on practice: Students will begin underpainting and blocking in colors, guided by the instructor.
    • Emphasis on achieving the correct tonal values and color harmony.

Day 3: Building Up Layers and Adding Depth

  • Morning Session:
    • Techniques for building up layers of paint to create depth and dimension.
    • Focus on refining details such as the drapery, facial features, and background elements.
  • Afternoon Session:
    • Hands-on practice: Students will continue building up layers, focusing on adding details and textures.
    • Instructor-led guidance on capturing the essence and expression of the Libyan Sibyl.

Day 4: Advanced Detailing and Refinement

  • Morning Session:
    • Advanced techniques for detailing, including working with highlights, shadows, and intricate textures.
    • Refinement of facial expressions, drapery, and other key elements.
  • Afternoon Session:
    • Hands-on practice: Students will work on finalizing the detailed aspects of their murals.
    • Continued instructor feedback and support in perfecting the mural.

Day 5: Final Touches and Presentation

  • Morning Session:
    • Finalizing the mural: Adding highlights, refining edges, and enhancing details.
    • Techniques for balancing the composition and ensuring overall harmony.
  • Afternoon Session:
    • Final touches and personalizing the mural.
    • Group critique and feedback session led by Ronald Layman.
    • Presentation of completed murals and awarding of certificates of completion.

By the end of this workshop, you will have created a masterful re-creation of the Libyan Sibyl, equipped with a deeper understanding of mural painting techniques and the confidence to apply these skills to future projects. All materials, including the high-quality slow-dry matte acrylics, are provided, ensuring a professional and rewarding experience.
